Saturday, September 29th, 2007Lieberman Dems Rattle Sabers, Bait Iran
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007A majority of the Democratic delegation to the United States Senate today voted with Republicans and one independent to issue an ultimatum to Iran, in a hostile and provocative move that must be seen as a bold affront to the lower-case democrats who put the party in the majority.
Of 48 Democratic senators voting on the resolution, 29 voted with Republicans and co-sponsor Joseph Lieberman in favor of a resolution expressing the “sense of the Senate” that elements of the Iranian army are a terrorist organization. Cited as a rationale for the resolution were some spurious claims by David Petraeus and Ryan Crocker that Iran was interfering in the prosecution of the war our government is now waging against the people of Iraq.
Acting as proxies for the government of Israel, which is aching to trash Iran’s infrastructure and military as retribution for critical comments by the Iranian president, Lieberman’s Dems seem to be caught in a transparent effort to provoke Iran to respond. Their hope is that tensions will escalate enough to justify a wave of bombing runs.
According to published reports, the executive has already drafted plans for such strikes, including the use of nuclear weapons, and Republicans and Democrats seem to be in agreement that Israel’s interests should govern U.S. military policy. Here are the Democrats who voted in favor of the resolution:
