Inspects steel products, such as blooms, bars, sheets, castings, and strips, for conformity to customer specifications, using measuring instruments: Examines product for flatness, straightness, and defects, such as cracks, slivers, or scars. Marks defective areas with chalk or paint. Verifies dimensions of product, using micrometers, gauges, tapes, and templates. Conducts hardness and heat resistance tests, using upset hammers, hardness testing machines, and heating furnaces. Rejects or regrades products not meeting specifications. Prepares reports covering materials scrapped or salvaged. May use ultrasonic equipment to detect internal and surface defects.
